NEW -Trauma Informed Bal-A-Vis-X (TIB) consists of some 45 exercises plus four multi-tiered movement patterns. Exercises are specifically designed to address toxic stress/PTSD in terms of Dr Bruce Perry’s Neurosequential Model of Education (NME) as I understand it. I adhere to Perry’s approach to victims of childhood trauma on my own. I am not affiliated with him nor have I met him.
My hope is that you can learn these exercises and patterns on your own without taking full Bal-A-Vis-X training(s). I wish to make instruction clear enough that you--teacher, therapist, social worker, counselor, parent--can then teach these techniques, one-on-one, to the victims of childhood trauma in your world.
I use the term Trauma Informed to distinguish this disc’s special content from previously published Bal-A-Vis-X material. The latter serves many purposes, often simultaneously. Only one purpose animates (informs) this content: to bring about self-induced and self-monitored mindfulness in measures of gradually increasing duration.

Disc One, Foundation Exercises, focuses on use of sand bags. Exercises progress from one person passing one bag to partner, to multiple persons passing one bag while receiving a second bag while moving feet in varied synchronous patterns, to the tossing of bags. This Disc lays the rhythmic and procedural foundations for all Bal-A-Vis-X exercises. Content of this Disc is appropriate for all ages, 3 to 100+.
Disc Two, Intermediate Exercises, introduces the proper use of Bal-A-Vis-X balls. Note: Bal-A-Vis-X is not a game or sport. Use of your personal sports skills in execution of these exercises—as opposed to careful adherence to our Bal-A-Vis-X techniques—will be counterproductive. Only using our techniques makes possible understanding of how to teach and modify exercises for the wide range of those who struggle for multiple physical/cognitive reasons. Techniques are shown in detail, often in isolation, throughout Disc Two.
Disc Three, Advanced Exercises, continues ball exercises into ever higher levels of intricacy. As well, deeper and more subtle modifications are demonstrated. Another section is devoted to the overlay of academic memorizations onto the rhythms of Bal-A-Vis-X. Another shows exercises in use by Seniors and the blind. And another shows use of balance board in academic settings.
All tracks, Disc One through Disc Three, are in the order we recommend you present them--bearing in mind that at any given time you may need to deviate from this order to use/find/create necessary modifications to bring about success.
NOTE: these discs show the How of Bal-A-Vis-X. Using them without a corresponding understanding of the What and Why of Bal-A-Vis-X is strongly discouraged. You will gain What and Why by attending at least one of our trainings and/or reading one of my books: Bal-A-Vis-X, second edition 2014 / Resonance, second edition 2016 / Cues, 2014.
Bal-A-Vis-X is an acronym for Balance/Auditory/Vision eXercises, all of which are deeply rooted in rhythm. Using sand-filled bags and racquetballs, these exercises address visual tracking deficiencies, auditory imprecision, impulsivity, balance and anxiety issues. Bag exercises are often combined with foot patterns; ball exercises are often done while standing on special balance boards. Individual exercises promote self-challenge. Partner and group exercises demand cooperation. All exercises foster peer teaching.

This book, based on Bill Hubert’s Bal-A-Vis-X program, was created by Francis Norsworthy. It is designed for use after one has taken a Bal-A-Vis- X training. It will not teach the program.
Each exercise is presented with brief instructions and a diagram to show directional flow of bags/balls plus order of moves and actions plus partner/group orientation of each participant to other(s).
This book is designed to be used as a reminder to teacher/student of the multiple techniques/details necessary for proper execution of each exercise. It is a post-training written and pictorial checklist, not a means to launch the program from scratch.
NOTE: Both Francis and Bill warn that buying this book without first taking authorized training is a waste of money.
Bill Hubert taught for many years in many settings. Always he found students struggling—cognitively and/or physically and/or socially. He did his best for them but could see his efforts were of small value. Watching them, always watching them, over time these strugglers began to teach him. He learned from them that optimal teaching is one thing, optimal learning another, and both must occur simultaneously for optimal gain. This book does not prescribe how to teach. He says little here about actual teaching moments. This book’s focus is on PRE-teaching moments, how to prepare learner and teacher for quality time together. In short chapters and spare sentences Hubert speaks to all teachers, OTs, PTs, rehab specialists, counselors, speech/language therapists, parents of children with academic troubles, parents of children with severe special needs—to everyone who works to benefit anyone who struggles to learn. His message is clear: so much depends upon what happens first, upon cues.
